Samsung notebook 9 pro use the same name for a very different machine this time. It’s available as a 15 inch which is what we have here and a 13 inch both of them work with the included lives in the silo in the front. Samsung thinks they’re pretty darn awesome for that because they have this little thing right here, which as you see on a laptop computer. But we have interesting dedicated graphics inside their new design language that Samsung has been using kind of newer and cleaner that teardrop size design which was very pretty for years. They use that’s gone now. It’s one of the lightest 15-inch that’s the mom. We’re looking at it 2 and 1 convertibles on the market currently. We’re going to look at it now.
I like the new Samsung. They’re going for something that’s classy as well spec yet. It’s affordable and in this case. I think they were trying to undercut the price of the HP Spectre x-360 models particularly. Our 15-inch here it’s $12.99 US Dollars and for that, you get that 15-inch 1080p display. I know it’s not 4k but you know what most people probably can’t tell the difference. If you’re doing photo editing and I do serious photo editing. Then you’ll appreciate having 4k because we can you know the zoom in so far to see things at 100% view and that sort of thing. But still, it’s a gorgeous display side-by-side with some of the 4k displays on the market.
You’d be hard-pressed to tell that difference. You have a backlit keyboard. You have a nice oversized track then that’s really delightful to use just kind of write well to finger to gesture is good practical tracking all that sort of stuff. You have two USB 3.0 ports. You have USB C as well HDMI a headphone jack and a micro SD card slot. So it’s well appointed in that respect, of course, the usual dual-band Wi-Fi and it’s Intel 82 65. so that’s good stuff with Bluetooth in son and best of all for those of you who like you too and one with a pen and thanks to Windows creator update these machines with tens are just popping up everywhere. This has a Wacom EMR digitizer which is still. it’s the most established or the oldest technology on the block and still really the best in terms of supporting kills right out of the box and programs like Photoshop for having really great pressure curves and lots of pressure levels good palm rejection and all that sort of thing and what Samsung did is. They actually put the pen right in the body of the laptop which is something that’s been disappearing.
As these devices get thinner and thinner. so the good part is you get the pin and you’re probably not going to lose it because it’s right in this little slot over here and you just yank it out and it has Air Command just like a Samsung Galaxy Note phone if you want to do screenshotting and stuff but the bad thing is when they put in the body is some small little toothpick. It does have a button right here. So Samsung wanting to say you want to talk about pencils apples. They decide to outdo them and they got together with Staedtler. The people who make the very nice pencil of those of you who are into writing instruments are aware of them. So they have something, that so skewer more fistic looks exactly like a pencil.
It’s amazing but just like Samsung’s pen that they’ve been using not just on this product but also on the tab s3 the galaxy that we reviewed racing the galaxy book 12 which this also works. It’s got a very teeny fine tip on it. so the good part is as the precision doesn’t get anyway so much when you’re actually looking at the screen one thing I like it is that it’s quite long so if you like to do digital painting like I do you have the painting kind of reach and technique and if you’re left-handed if you’re using those annoying scroll bars that are always on welcome EMR technology that’s been around for a long time. You might have tens if you’re a pen person that use that technology this is from the old Samsung Slate 7 you remember that tablet I made this. Actually works very well.
This is a bamboo pen from Wacom that Rock’em. Actually makes and it’s the one meant for EMR digitizers. this one works fine too and the nice thing is it used to be if you mix and match these say on Samsung Galaxy Note phones and some of the other you know devices that were more recent. You would see a pin offset and that doesn’t happen with these actually are calibrated well to the screen. So I don’t know what kind of magic they’re doing there. But so far all of these from my older pen collection also work. So if you don’t want to go out and buy this one. Although it’s pretty nice and I would say go ahead and do it you can use some of your old pens. So back to the specs of the machine. Currently, there is only one configuration. It’s $12.99 interestingly this is a little bit less money than the Galaxy book 12-inch model. The hiring configuration that’s available you get 16 gigabytes of dual-channel ddr2 RAM. That’s soldered on boards not gradable but then again 16 gigs tend to be the max on a lot of ultrabooks. Anyways that is expandable. So that’s fine with me. It has a 256 gig SSD that is upgradable if you wish to open it up and do it yourself not too hard, it’s an m2 but Samson keeps using SATA interface instead of PCIe. I don’t know what they have against PCIe especially. Since they make so many PCIe drives that are using everybody else’s laptops. So it was good but not really really fast SSD speeds inside.
You get a core i7 – 7,500 units Intel seventh generation KB like 15-watt dual core CPU, just like the HP Spectre x-360 15 inch but the Lenovo Yoga 720 is a quad core. So it’s in a different category there in terms of performance one thing that’s pretty neat is you get dedicated graphics in the 15 inch. You get AMD Radeon 544 graphics with 2 gigabytes of gddr5 vram and Sun. so that’s sort of like equivalences the 2016 15 inch MacBook Pro graphics. So that’s pretty interesting. It’s not chichi toes it’s still what you call in mid-range GPUs. This is not for gaming .although it does help accelerate games and certainly helps with Photoshop and Premiere but it’s nice because this is the latest generation Radeon. It’s a little bit more modern architecture than the 940 MX from Nvidia that we’ve seen is a 14 nanometer architecture. It’s pretty powerful which is one of the reasons. Apple went with it for their 15-inch MacBook Pro as well if you go for the 13 inch model for this. Then you’re just using Intel HD 620 graphics. So there’s no dedicated graphics and speaking of the until HD 620. Of course, this has switched all graphics.
So it can switch to the HD 620 and save some battery power when you don’t need the dedicated graphics. It’s quite possibly the lightest 15 inch – and one on the market right now 3.7 9 pounds which is 1.7 kilograms. it is noticeably lighter than the Lenovo Yoga 720 and the spectre x360 which is the selling point for Portability and it’s a little bit less of a bear when you’re flipping around and you want to start using it as a drawing our graphics editing tablet .pretty fan is 17 millimeters casing is all metals all aluminum and it feels pretty darn sturdy there’s no flex anywhere it’s well made Samsung 10 pretty much the only player in the higher end of the laptop market and they make nice products the hinges are nice and sticky it’s a little too stiff to actually open it with one finger which isn’t unusual for convertibles because they do have extra stiff hinges. So it does the 360-degree thing you can use intent presentation tablet mode. so you name the notebook has a Windows hello camera for facial recognition login and a 720p webcam inside as well and you have to 1.5 watt speakers and sound okay but not great the volume is decent on them but they sell a little bit thin Samsung laptops lightly have not always had the most immersive sounding audio headphone audio.
Since I’ve been returning the headphones, as a result, an external speaker that’s absolutely fine. This is a 15 inch IPS display. It’s not one of the Samsung pls displays, it’s actually a Bohai just display for those of you who follow panel manufactures and it’s a very nice display. They claimed 315 it’s we measure 334 and you know this normally variance in brightness does a bright outdoor mode as well very color accurate. The Delta Y on this was 1.4 sections. You can see that on the screen that’s one of the best that we’ve seen on a laptop. so yes it’s not 4k yes it’s 1080 instead but you know it’s a very high-quality panel and it’s just beautiful to look at gamma is spot-on at 2.2 which is important as often calibrating a display whose gamma the wrong side, you can actually use them and not block your view. So this is sold separately Samsung doesn’t make it Staedtler, makes it Stella Norris. It’s called them. They sell the best buy in other places with these Samsung’s with digitizers Wacom digitizer to solve a is 45 bucks again because it’s is off you never quite get where you want in terms of getting to look natural and accurate likewise the white point by today’s fair is pretty tolerable at 7400 and the ideal would be 65 to 66 hundred capelin but we’ve seen ones that go as high as 8700 lately.
So this one’s pretty good you can see the black levels the contrast on. It is also quite good overall. It’s just a really good looking display then that’s important the same that just probably is going to be used a lot for editing in Photoshop. for example and other art programs performance on this is interesting because you have the dual-core CPU plus the dedicated graphics and usually with dual-core CPUs you less often see the dedicated graphics but this is again mid-range the AMD Radeon 540. It’s nothing to sneeze at though it actually does better than the Nvidia 940 and Nexon benchmarks. Now it’s no GTX 1050 or something like that. This is not out now gaming laptop but you can see me playing Bioshock infinite here and that’s at 1920 by 1080 on high settings and the frame rates on it are very smooth and very good. So if you want to play World of Warcraft League of Legends and other games like Skyrim obviously Bioshock, you can see playing here. It’s actually good for that and even more impressive is. It doesn’t get that hot you can see the temperatures of the casing. When playing games on the bottom and that’s really not considered that there’s a hot spot there. Obviously where the GPU is but overall not bad and the fan those two fans inside. They’re clearly effective because the CPU and GPU temperatures never saw the CPU go above about 82 centigrade when pushing.
It really hard and the GPU typical typically is around 65 centigrade. It’s not loud at all and sometimes you know fans, Ronnie. But yes, they are so it this feels far like the new surface pro for 2017 like there’s a new generation of engineering gone going on here. We actually get to use our horsepower without throttling the untoward noise that we used to have that makes them seem kind of sophisticated. Basically terms of engineering side the Pentail technology here is just like the Samsung Galaxy book 12. We recently review which is to say really excellent like I said. It’s still hard to beat Wacom EMR imagine that we’ve got n-trig and the surface family and then the specter we have walking zone AES. they’re more affordable technology and a bunch of yoga’s for example like the yoga 720 and the mahkum EMR just still feels the most natural the most pen-like and particularly with Samsung has done here. It has the same silky kind of feeling where the ink is just flowing now. Then part that spiking has a very very teeny thin nib on it. so you’re not having a whole lot of contact with the glass and it can seem a little floaty that’s one thing I had to get used to but the precision of the lack of parallax the pressure sensitivity with the incredibly low initial activation force required me really almost too low. It’s pretty amazing. It’s a delight to use.
I think particularly artists and avid note takers are really going to like this and you might consider this over the competition just for the pen experience by the way. You get a couple of extra nibs in the box for the built-in Samsung S Pen and those do work on the Staedtler pen. As well they’re interchangeable. So you can swap those around. There are no separate pen controlled settings welcomes field driver if you’re familiar with that does not install this is no compatible hardware even though it is a Wacom field digitizer go figure but you do have Samsung as usual kind of rich setting going on here. So this quick settings you can put whatever you want here your favorite settings. So we have Auto buddy it means when you open up the lid it’ll turn on automatically. If you like you’ve got silent mode. You can disable USB charging if you want by the way. You can charge this through the USB C port even though the charger is a barrel pin connector. You can use external battery pack smartphone charges that sort of thing power management. You’ve got very life extender if you don’t want to always go up to full charge to save the battery. We have maximum performance maximum performance or if you really want to crank it up display.
We got Samsung as usual collection of just like on their phones different color profiles that you can use. I went with photo editing and then I use the calibration on it to get even close to ideal. It was pretty close and you have outdoor mode. If we turn that on you can see it goes. I would say that’s probably going to be at least another 100 nits brighter on top of the 315. it’s that it can already do audio controls nothing too exciting going on there but you get the idea it’s nice that they have all of this available to you just in one quick place other than that Samsung has a couple of their own little apps for photo viewing and stuff like that just think they do with Galaxy phones. it may be a little bit of overload and unnecessary but whatever you can uninstall those of you on laptop ships with Samsung’s usual compact charger very you know to carry around a 60-watt and as a little barrel tin connector but like I said you can also use USB seated charges as well.
So if you have one of those big battery packs or something like that on the go and you don’t have access to an AC outlet. You can do that too for sell fifty-four-watt hour berry that’s a decent sized battery, Ola. you can see is more than a 13-inch send and a 15-inch laptop to fight that I think largely because Radeon graphics are very power efficient on this. It’s a dual-core up so not a quad-core CPU inside battery life has been pretty good maybe not the 11 hours that Samsung claims for both are 13 and 15-inches, models. But we’ve been doing about seven to eight hours pretty easy without micromanaging power at forty percent brightness and that’s a mix of easy things like streaming video. so that’s pretty good battery life for a 15-inch laptop that has some chopped and to get inside you under the Philips head screws tiny little ones all around the edges. There are no hidden screws. You do not have to remove feed rain like that. But do remember to remove the pen first before you take off the bottom cover and once inside you see. we got two fans here because we have a both with CPU and the GPU to cool and we have the Wi-Fi card soldered on board on a daughter card which is what Samsung has been doing lately with their laptops.
There’s our m2 SSD a Samsung brand one what a surprise the hold on often the Samsung doesn’t use their own brand SSDs. there’s our battery and the RAM is soldered on board. So there are no RAM slots inside so that’s the Samsung notebook 9 Pro. You know it gives a competition or a run for the money particularly the HP specters x360 and then there’s a Lenovo yoga 720 and each of those different models has and strengths too. If you want to see a smack down, maybe a three-way between the three of them just shout out in the comments.
Anyway for a pretty decent price you get a lot inside to get some dedicated graphics. You get a cool and quiet design. We get a core i7 CPU and lovely display and that Wacom pen is just which Samsung calls the s-pen is just the bee’s knees. It’s just the best still out there.
